Notes To Myself
Notes to Myself
A Private Conversation That Brings Clarity
Welcome
Years ago, I discovered Hugh Prather’s Notes to Myself and was deeply moved by its intimate, honest dialogue with the self.
Inspired, I began writing short notes to myself —
not poetry,
not literature,
not for anyone else,
not to sound wise.
Just simple observations about what I was thinking, feeling, and choosing.
Those notes changed my relationship with myself.
They made me more truthful, more compassionate,
and far clearer about the path I was actually walking.
🛠 The Tool: Notes to Myself
What This Tool Is
Notes to Myself is a simple practice of writing for clarity, not performance.
It is not journaling as most people imagine it.
There is no structure to follow.
No requirement to write every day.
No need to do it “well.”
It is simply a way to listen more closely to yourself.
Why This Works
Let’s agree on something important:
When thoughts stay in your head, they stay tangled.
When you write them down, they become visible — and workable.
Writing creates distance.
Distance creates choice.
Over time, these small notes reveal patterns, direction, and truth —
like looking at the wake behind a boat and finally seeing where you’ve been.
✍️ How to Use This Tool
After using any Bright Moments tool — especially Breathing In — Tool One —
take a moment with paper and pen (or keyboard) and write.
You might write:
what you noticed
how your body feels now
one word that describes your state
Sometimes it’s a sentence.
Sometimes a single word.
Occasionally, a paragraph.
There is no right amount.
Keep your hand moving.
Don’t edit.
Don’t correct.
These notes are not about writing.
They are about honesty.
🌱 Ways to Practice
You might write:
after using a Bright Moments tool
when you feel overwhelmed
when making a decision
once a day, week, or month
whenever you want a private conversation with a trusted friend — yourself
There is no schedule to keep.
Clarity comes from returning, not from forcing.
🧭 A New Way I Use This Tool
For many years, I wrote my notes in notebooks — and you may prefer that.
Sixteen years ago, I found a way that worked far better for me.
I wanted my notes to be:
private and secure
easy to search by topic or date
accessible anywhere
motivating to return to
After trying many options, I found Penzu — a private, web-based journaling platform — and I’ve used it ever since.
I don’t represent Penzu.
I don’t earn anything from recommending it.
I recommend it because it made this practice easy and valuable. It was almost like having a guest teacher. It changed my life.
Penzu even sends me random notes I wrote months ago or as far back as 16 years ago when i started using it — reminders of choices I made and how far I’ve come.

Example 1
This morning I feel grateful.
I’m awake, alive, and full of creative energy.
I want to remember this feeling.
Example 2
I noticed I had been critical of my art and telling myself I wasn’t good enough. Today I’m enjoying the process again.
I’m making without worrying about who likes it.
Example 3
i’m feeling anxious about my new health club membership.
I’m afraid of embarrassing myself and I feel shy about meeting people.
Writing this down helps me breathe a little easier
